FAQ

Cooking With Cannabis

Why do you clean your bud before using it to create cannaoil, cannaoil and other edibles?

Cannabis contains certain compounds that are responsible for each strain’s pronounced odor and taste. These compounds are terpenes, chlorophyll and flavonoids. While these compounds are all beneficial and desirable when inhaling cannabis (smoking and vaping), they are not beneficial or desirable when cooking with cannabis. This is because these compounds are very volatile and are “burnt and destroyed” between 100ºF-200ºF. The “weedy” taste often found in edibles is the result of burnt terpenes, chlorophyll and flavonoids. By removing these compounds before processing your edibles, you are removing the major components responsible for the “weedy” taste.

Will washing my cannabis ruin or reduce the potency of my flower and/or my edibles?

No. The trichomes, those little crystal glands are hydrophobic, meaning they will not wash off in water. They are also stable up to 365ºF, so placing them in boiling water (212ºF) as part of the cleaning process, will not harm them.

Will I lose any trichomes in the cleaning process?

Yes and no. You will not lose any trichomes that systemically part of the bud you clean. You will, however, lose any loose trichomes that have broken off of other buds which have stuck to the bud you are cleaning. These trichomes will fall off during the blanching process as appear as part of the “brown sludge” floating on top of the blanching water.

There is sticky stuff inside my blanching pot following the blanching process? What is this and how can I remove it?

The sticky stuff are actually the loose trichomes that have fallen off your buds during the blanching process. If you like, you can carefully scrape them of the pots walls with a small knife. The sticky stuff is a type of hash and is clean and smokable. Just roll it into a ball and add it to a bowl of your favorite flower! You can then use any alcohol to clean your pot and remove any residue.

Why do I have to decarb my bud before making cannaoil, cannabutter and edibles?

Check out this blog post explaining why it’s important to decarb your cannabis before using it to create edibles and how to do it.

I ordered your LEVO Potency Increaser, can I use it to decarb my bud in the LEVO?

Yes. The “Levo Potency Increaser” can be used to decarb your cannabis before you infuse it into your oil or butter. Simply invert the screen (place it in the LEVO upside down), place your bud on top of it and set the machine to dry/decarb.

Why do I have to invert the potency screen to decarb?

By inverting the Levo Potency Increaser, you are creating an air barrier between the heat source and your bud. This keep the flower further from the heat source and prevents your bud from scorching.

What are the best temperatures and times to infuse cannabutter and cannaoil

See the handy temperatures and times guide to help you make the best tasting potent infusions. All proceeds of each purchase of the guide is donated to the Last Prisoner Project (LPP). The Last Prisoner Project is a team of dedicated cannabis industry leaders, criminal and social justice advocates, policy and education experts, and leaders in social justice and drug policy reform, who are committed to freeing every last prisoner of the unjust war on drugs. This starts with the 40,000 people in prison for cannabis offenses in legal states.
